B.Tech Mechanical Engineering Course: Eligibility
B.Tech mechanical engineering course is available in different colleges and universities around the world. In India, there are more than a dozen colleges and universities that offer this course. However, the eligibility criteria could vary, yes based on the university and college it could change. But, based on UGC norms and regulations, here are some of the general eligibility criteria.
- The candidate or applicant should have completed 12th from a government recognized school board.
- He/she should have studied physics, mathematics, and chemistry as their main subjects in 12th.
- The applicant or candidate should have scored at least 50% aggregate mark
- All reserved categories would get a 5% relaxation in aggregate marks.
Based on the university or college, the minimum aggregate mark requirement could vary.
- A top university like IIT, VIT, Birla, etc., conducts an entrance test that the candidate has to appear and has to secure an appropriate rank. The admission would be based on this rank.
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering course: Admission process
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering admission could be based on several factors, different colleges and universities could admit students based on merit, management quota, or based on entrance rank.
There are 4 entrance tests conducted in India, in which, 3 are based on state or college.
- IIT JEE main, joint entrance exam conducted all over India to select students for IIT, NIT, and other top engineering colleges or universities all over the country.
- IIT JEE advanced, conducted for students who have passed the IIT JEE main entrance exam.
- TANCET, conducted by the Tamil Nadu government, to allot candidates to different colleges or universities all around Tamil Nadu.
- KCET, conducted by the Karnataka state government, to allot candidates to different colleges or universities all around Karnataka.
- VITEEE, conducted by the Vellore Institute of Technology for allocating candidates in their university.
- BITSAT, conducted by Birla Institute of technology and science admission test to allocate candidates in their BITS campus in Pilani.
Apart from these entrance tests, there are many other tests, each of them designed for allocating or selecting candidates for specific courses.
The admission process could be split into 3
- Direct admission – some colleges admit candidates directly in their college based on 12th merit or in management seat. Most commonly, acquiring a management seat involves paying donations.
- Direct admission for diploma holders – Diploma holders could directly acquire admission to a college or university.
- Entrance exam – Based on the state level or national level entrance test rank, a student could acquire a seat in a college or university. However, most commonly, such an entrance test automatically allocates candidates to a college based on the entrance test merit rank or based on the candidate’s preference.

The fees of B.Tech mechanical engineering course across India is different, while government colleges that admit students based on the entrance test result would collect less than 10000 per semester or year, the management seat or private colleges would have fees around 50,000 to 1.5 lakhs.
A mechanical engineer as of today could receive an average of 6 lakhs per annum and it will depend on the firm and experience. International firms pay up to 15 to 20 lakhs per annum. It could also be more than this value.
