SDM means Sub-Divisional Magistrate. It is one of the most powerful administrative posts at the sub-division level. In most states, officers selected through the State PCS or State Civil Services can be posted as SDM after training and field posting. The salary of an SDM is attractive because the post carries administrative authority, field responsibility, government facilities and long-term promotion scope.

One important point is that SDM salary is not exactly the same in every state. Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Haryana and other states follow their own state pay rules. Still, in many states, the starting salary structure is close to the Level-10 / Grade Pay ₹5,400 pattern. The 7th CPC pay matrix shows Level-10 starting at ₹56,100, with the level going up to ₹1,77,500.

SDM Salary

SDM Pay Scale

A newly appointed SDM or Deputy Collector-type officer is commonly placed around Pay Level-10, with starting basic pay of ₹56,100 per month. In the old pay structure, this was generally linked with PB-3 ₹15,600–₹39,100 and Grade Pay ₹5,400.

Basic pay is only the starting point. The final salary becomes higher after adding Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance and other admissible benefits. After that, deductions such as NPS, insurance, income tax and other recoveries are subtracted to calculate the in-hand salary.

SDM Salary at One Place

The table below gives a practical estimate for a newly appointed SDM-type officer at starting basic pay of ₹56,100. DA is taken at 60%, as the Central Government DA order enhanced DA from 58% to 60% with effect from 1 January 2026. HRA is calculated at 30%, 20% and 10% because HRA rates rise to these slabs when DA crosses 50%. Transport Allowance for Pay Level 9 and above is ₹7,200 + DA in X cities and ₹3,600 + DA in Y/Z cities.

Salary Component X City / Big City Posting Y City Posting Z City / District Posting
Basic Pay ₹56,100 ₹56,100 ₹56,100
Dearness Allowance, 60% ₹33,660 ₹33,660 ₹33,660
House Rent Allowance ₹16,830 ₹11,220 ₹5,610
Transport Allowance with DA ₹11,520 ₹5,760 ₹5,760
Approx. Gross Salary ₹1,18,110 ₹1,06,740 ₹1,01,130
NPS Deduction, approx. ₹8,976 ₹8,976 ₹8,976
Other Deductions, approx. ₹2,000–₹5,000 ₹2,000–₹5,000 ₹2,000–₹5,000
Approx. In-Hand Salary ₹1,04,000–₹1,07,000 ₹93,000–₹96,000 ₹88,000–₹91,000

These figures are approximate. Actual salary may differ by state, posting place, state DA rate, HRA rule, government accommodation, official vehicle facility, tax deduction, NPS/OPS rules and department-level recoveries.

SDM In-Hand Salary

The in-hand salary of an SDM generally comes around ₹88,000 to ₹1,07,000 per month at the starting level, depending on city category and deductions.

In a big city posting, salary may be higher because HRA and Transport Allowance are better. In district or smaller-place postings, HRA may be lower. If government accommodation is provided, HRA may not be paid. In that case, the monthly cash salary can reduce, although the officer receives accommodation benefit.

Income tax also affects the final credited salary. Some officers may get higher in-hand salary in early months if TDS is not heavy. Later, when regular income tax is deducted, the credited amount may reduce.

Main Allowances Given to SDM

The first major allowance is Dearness Allowance. DA is calculated as a percentage of basic pay. At 60% DA, an officer with ₹56,100 basic pay gets ₹33,660 as DA.

The second important allowance is House Rent Allowance. It depends on posting location and accommodation rules. If the officer gets government quarters or official residence, HRA is usually not paid.

The third allowance is Transport Allowance. However, in many field postings, an SDM may also get official vehicle support for government work. This depends on state rules and posting arrangements.

Apart from salary allowances, SDMs may get medical benefits, paid leave, government accommodation, staff support, official vehicle facility, telephone or communication support, travel allowance for official duty and pension-related benefits as per applicable rules.

Deductions from SDM Salary

The biggest regular deduction is usually NPS contribution, where applicable. Under NPS for government employees, employee contribution is 10% of Basic plus DA. For ₹56,100 basic pay and ₹33,660 DA, this comes to about ₹8,976 per month.

Other deductions may include state insurance, group insurance, professional tax in some states, income tax, house rent recovery, vehicle recovery where applicable, loan recovery or other department-level deductions.

SDM Job Profile

An SDM is responsible for administration at the sub-division level. The officer handles law and order coordination, revenue work, land-related matters, magistrate duties, disaster management, public grievances, elections, protocol duty and implementation of government schemes.

The SDM also coordinates with police, tehsildars, block officers, municipal bodies and other departments. During emergencies, festivals, protests, floods, elections or public order situations, the SDM plays a major role.

This is why the post carries both salary and authority. It is not only an office job. It involves field visits, public dealing and decision-making.

Salary Growth and Promotion

SDM salary increases through annual increment, DA revision and promotion. After every annual increment, the basic pay moves to the next cell in the pay matrix. When basic pay rises, DA and HRA also increase.

With experience and promotion, an SDM can move to higher administrative posts such as Additional District Magistrate, Chief Development Officer, Municipal Commissioner, District Magistrate-level responsibilities in state cadre, and other senior posts depending on state service rules.
