Army Clerk is now commonly recruited as Agniveer Clerk / Store Keeper Technical (SKT) under the Agnipath system. Earlier, candidates often searched it as “Soldier Clerk salary,” but the present entry route is different. Agniveers are enrolled for four years and form a distinct rank in the Indian Army. After four years, up to 25% of a batch may get the opportunity to apply for permanent enrolment in the regular cadre, based on Army requirements and performance.

This is why candidates should not confuse Army Clerk salary with the old regular soldier salary. During the Agniveer period, the salary is paid as a fixed monthly package with yearly increment. It is not the same as a regular Sepoy pay matrix salary.

Army Clerk Salary

Army Clerk Pay Structure

Agniveer Clerk / SKT gets a fixed monthly package from the first year to the fourth year. Out of this package, 70% is paid as in-hand salary, while 30% goes to the Agniveer Corpus Fund. The Government also contributes an equal amount to the corpus fund. After completion of four years, the Agniveer receives a one-time Seva Nidhi package.

Army Clerk Salary at One Place

Year Monthly Package In-Hand Salary, 70% Agniveer Corpus Contribution, 30% Govt Contribution
1st Year ₹30,000 ₹21,000 ₹9,000 ₹9,000
2nd Year ₹33,000 ₹23,100 ₹9,900 ₹9,900
3rd Year ₹36,500 ₹25,550 ₹10,950 ₹10,950
4th Year ₹40,000 ₹28,000 ₹12,000 ₹12,000

After four years, the total Agniveer contribution is about ₹5.02 lakh, and the Government also contributes about ₹5.02 lakh. The Seva Nidhi package is around ₹10.04 lakh excluding interest.

Army Clerk In-Hand Salary

The in-hand salary of an Agniveer Army Clerk starts from ₹21,000 per month in the first year. It increases to ₹23,100 in the second year, ₹25,550 in the third year and ₹28,000 in the fourth year.

This is the amount paid after deducting the 30% contribution to the Agniveer Corpus Fund. So, the salary may look lower in hand, but the deducted amount is not lost. It is saved in the corpus fund and matched by the Government.

Allowances Given to Army Clerk

Along with the monthly package, Agniveer Clerk / SKT may get Risk and Hardship Allowance, wherever applicable in the Indian Army. Dress Allowance and Travel Allowance are also paid as per rules.

During the engagement period, Agniveers are also entitled to medical facilities at Service Hospitals and CSD provisions. They also get annual leave of 30 days per year, while sick leave is based on medical advice.

Agniveers also receive a non-contributory life insurance cover of ₹48 lakh during the engagement period. However, Agniveers are not entitled to gratuity or pensionary benefits after four years unless they are later selected for regular cadre.

What Happens After Permanent Selection?

If an Agniveer Clerk is selected for permanent enrolment after four years, the salary changes to the regular Army pay structure. Regular Personnel Below Officer Rank come under the Defence Pay Matrix. The Ministry of Defence pay matrix shows Level-3 starting at ₹21,700, and PBOR personnel get Military Service Pay of ₹5,200 per month, counted for DA and pension purposes.

In regular service, salary becomes higher because the person may get basic pay, DA, Military Service Pay, field-area allowance, ration-related benefits, HRA or accommodation benefits, transport-related benefits and other admissible allowances. The final in-hand salary depends on rank, posting, unit, field area, deductions and facilities provided.

Job Profile of Army Clerk

Army Clerk / SKT is not only a typing or office job. The work includes documentation, record maintenance, unit-level accounts support, store-related records, data handling, office correspondence, computer work and administrative support.

However, the candidate is still part of the Indian Army. So discipline, physical fitness, military training, posting flexibility and service conditions are important. Even clerk-category personnel may be assigned duties according to Army requirements.

Why Army Clerk Salary Is Attractive

The starting in-hand salary may look modest compared with some civilian government posts, but the Army Clerk role gives training, discipline, uniform service, medical support, CSD benefit, insurance cover and Seva Nidhi savings. For young candidates, the biggest financial benefit is the lump-sum amount after four years.

The post is suitable for candidates who want a defence career but also have interest in documentation, accounts, records and office support work.
