CDS means Combined Defence Services. It is an exam conducted by UPSC for officer entry into the Indian Armed Forces through the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers Training Academy. Candidates selected through CDS join training first, and after successful completion of training, they are commissioned as officers in the Army, Navy or Air Force. CDS is conducted for recruitment of officer cadets into IMA, INA, AFA and OTA.
CDS salary should be understood in two parts. During training, candidates receive a fixed stipend. After commissioning, they receive full officer salary according to rank, pay level and allowances.

After successful training, the candidate is commissioned as an officer. Army candidates usually start as Lieutenant, Navy candidates as Sub Lieutenant, and Air Force candidates as Flying Officer. These entry-level commissioned officer ranks come under Pay Level 10, where the starting basic pay is ₹56,100 and the pay scale goes up to ₹1,77,500. The defence pay matrix lists Level 10 for commissioned officers with starting basic pay of ₹56,100.
Apart from basic pay, officers also receive Military Service Pay of ₹15,500 per month, along with DA, HRA, Transport Allowance and other service-related benefits. MSP of ₹15,500 is applicable to officers below Brigadier or equivalent rank.

CDS In-Hand Salary
The starting in-hand salary after CDS usually comes around ₹1.05 lakh to ₹1.30 lakh per month after commissioning.
In metro or X-category city postings, the in-hand salary may be close to ₹1.18 lakh–₹1.30 lakh. In Y-category postings, it may come around ₹1.10 lakh–₹1.22 lakh. In Z-category or smaller postings, it may remain around ₹1.05 lakh–₹1.16 lakh.
If government accommodation, mess facility or field accommodation is provided, HRA may not be paid separately. In that case, cash salary may reduce, but the officer receives accommodation and service facilities.
CDS Salary During Training
During training at IMA, INA, AFA or OTA, candidates receive a stipend of around ₹56,100 per month. This is not the same as full commissioned officer salary.
During training, cadets usually get food, accommodation, uniform and training facilities as per academy rules. The actual bank-credit amount may be lower after academy-related deductions.
Once training is completed and the candidate is commissioned as an officer, full pay and allowances start according to rank.
CDS Salary Structure All Components
Basic Pay
Basic pay is the fixed foundation of salary. After commissioning through CDS, the starting basic pay is ₹56,100 per month under Pay Level 10. This amount increases through annual increments and promotions.
Military Service Pay
Military Service Pay is given because of the special nature of military duty. For commissioned officers below Brigadier or equivalent rank, MSP is ₹15,500 per month.
Dearness Allowance
DA is added to protect salary from inflation. At 60%, DA is calculated on basic pay plus MSP. For a newly commissioned officer, DA comes around ₹42,960 per month.
House Rent Allowance
HRA depends on posting location and accommodation. If government accommodation is provided, HRA may not be paid separately. If HRA is paid, it is higher in X-category cities and lower in Y/Z-category locations.
Transport Allowance
Transport Allowance is paid as per rules. For officer-level pay, it can be higher in major cities and lower in other areas. The amount also increases with DA.
Field, Risk And Special Allowances
Defence officers may receive field allowance, high-altitude allowance, risk allowance, flying allowance, sea-going allowance or other special benefits depending on service branch and posting. These are not fixed for every officer.
Uniform And Kit Benefits
Officers receive uniform, dress and kit-related support as per service rules. Defence service requires proper turnout, uniform maintenance and official dress standards.
Medical Benefits
CDS officers get defence medical facilities for themselves and eligible family members as per rules. This is one of the major benefits of defence service.
Deductions From CDS Salary
CDS officer salary deductions are different from many civilian government jobs. Regular NPS deduction is not normally explained in the same way as civilian posts.
The common deductions may include income tax, Army Group Insurance or equivalent service insurance, mess charges, regimental fund, canteen recovery, accommodation-related recovery, loan recovery and other service-level deductions.
Income tax can be significant because officer salary is high. However, taxable salary depends on allowances, exemptions, investment declarations and the selected tax regime.
CDS Job Profile
A CDS officer works as a commissioned officer in the Army, Navy or Air Force. The job includes leadership, command responsibility, training, operational duty, administration, discipline, planning and management of men and resources.
In the Army, the officer may serve in infantry, artillery, armoured corps, engineers, signals, services or other arms and services. In the Navy, the officer may work in executive, technical or other naval branches. In the Air Force, the officer may serve in flying, ground duty or technical branches depending on selection and eligibility.
The job needs physical fitness, courage, leadership, discipline and mental toughness. It is not a normal office job. Officers may be posted in field areas, borders, ships, air bases, training units or operational locations.
CDS Salary After 5, 10 And 20 Years
| Service Stage | Approx. In-Hand Salary |
| During Training | Around ₹56,100 Stipend |
| After Commissioning | ₹1.05 Lakh–₹1.30 Lakh |
| After 5 Years | ₹1.25 Lakh–₹1.55 Lakh |
| After 10 Years | ₹1.50 Lakh–₹1.85 Lakh |
| After 15 Years | ₹1.85 Lakh–₹2.25 Lakh |
| After 20 Years | ₹2.20 Lakh+ |
These are broad estimates. Actual salary growth depends on rank, promotion, DA revision, posting, special allowance, branch, field area and deductions.
Career Growth And Promotion
CDS offers strong career growth because it leads to commissioned officer service. An officer may move from Lieutenant to Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel and higher ranks in the Army. Equivalent promotion paths exist in the Navy and Air Force.
Promotion improves both salary and responsibility. The officer also gets leadership exposure, command opportunities, training courses, operational experience and long-term defence career value.
CDS is not just a salary-based job. It is a career of leadership, discipline and national service.
CDS Vs NDA Salary
