ITBP, or Indo-Tibetan Border Police, is one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was raised in 1962 and is mainly responsible for guarding the India-China border. ITBP personnel serve in some of the toughest locations in the country, including high-altitude border posts, snow-bound areas, difficult terrain and sensitive internal security zones. The official ITBP profile mentions that many of its border posts are located between 9,000 feet and 18,800 feet, where temperatures can fall up to minus 45°C.

Because of this tough duty profile, ITBP salary is not limited to basic pay only. A constable or officer receives Dearness Allowance, HRA, Transport Allowance, Ration Money Allowance, Special Compensatory Allowance where applicable, medical benefits, uniform-related benefits and other admissible allowances.

For most candidates, the most searched salary is ITBP Constable salary, because it is one of the main entry-level posts. However, ITBP has different posts such as Constable, Head Constable, ASI and SI, and each post has a different pay level.

ITBP Salary

ITBP Salary Overview

ITBP follows the Central Government 7th Pay Commission pay matrix. The official ITBP recruitment pay-scale page lists Constable posts under Pay Level-3 with starting pay of ₹21,700, Head Constable under Level-4 with ₹25,500, Assistant Sub Inspector under Level-5 with ₹29,200, and Sub Inspector under Level-6 with ₹35,400.

Head Constable Level-4 ₹25,500–₹81,100
Assistant Sub Inspector Level-5 ₹29,200–₹92,300
Sub Inspector Level-6 ₹35,400–₹1,12,400

The table above shows only the basic pay structure. The real salary becomes higher after allowances are added.

ITBP Constable Salary at One Place

The table below gives a practical starting salary estimate for an ITBP Constable at basic pay of ₹21,700. DA is calculated at 60%, as the Central Government revised Dearness Allowance to 60% from 1 January 2026. HRA is calculated at 30%, 20% and 10% for X, Y and Z cities after DA crosses 50%.

Salary Component X City Y City Z City / Other Places
Basic Pay ₹21,700 ₹21,700 ₹21,700
Dearness Allowance, 60% ₹13,020 ₹13,020 ₹13,020
House Rent Allowance ₹6,510 ₹4,340 ₹2,170
Transport Allowance with DA ₹5,760 ₹2,880 ₹2,880
Approx. Gross Salary Before Ration/Field Allowance ₹46,990 ₹41,940 ₹39,770
NPS Deduction, approx. ₹3,472 ₹3,472 ₹3,472
Other Deductions, approx. ₹500–₹1,500 ₹500–₹1,500 ₹500–₹1,500
Approx. In-Hand Salary ₹42,000–₹43,000 ₹37,000–₹38,000 ₹35,000–₹36,000

This is a base estimate. If Ration Money Allowance, Special Compensatory Allowance, border-area allowance, hardship allowance or other duty-based benefits are paid in cash, the practical salary can become higher. Exact salary depends on posting place, unit, accommodation, deductions and duty conditions.

ITBP In-Hand Salary

The starting in-hand salary of an ITBP Constable is usually around ₹35,000 to ₹43,000 per month before adding any special field or border-related allowance. In an X-category city, the amount may be close to ₹42,000–₹43,000. In smaller places, it may remain around ₹35,000–₹38,000.

But ITBP is not a normal city posting job. Many personnel are posted in border areas, high-altitude locations and difficult zones. In such cases, Ration Money Allowance and special compensatory or hardship-related allowances can increase the actual monthly earning. This is why one ITBP constable may receive a different salary from another constable with the same basic pay.

ITBP Pay Scale by Post

A Constable starts at Pay Level-3 with basic pay of ₹21,700. This is the most common entry-level salary. A Head Constable starts at Level-4 with basic pay of ₹25,500. An ASI starts at Level-5 with basic pay of ₹29,200, while an SI starts at Level-6 with basic pay of ₹35,400.

As the rank increases, the basic pay also increases. Since DA, HRA and NPS are linked with basic pay, the total salary and deductions also rise with rank.

Allowances Given to ITBP Personnel

The first major allowance is Dearness Allowance. At 60% DA, an ITBP Constable with basic pay of ₹21,700 gets ₹13,020 as DA. This is one of the largest salary components after basic pay.

The second important allowance is House Rent Allowance. HRA is paid when government accommodation is not provided. If the employee gets government accommodation or barrack facility, HRA may not be paid in the same way as city employees.

The third allowance is Transport Allowance. For Pay Level-3 to Level-8 employees, it is generally ₹3,600 plus DA in higher-class cities and ₹1,800 plus DA in other places.

ITBP recruitment notices also mention that posts carry Dearness Allowance, Ration Money Allowance, Special Compensatory Allowance, free accommodation or HRA, Transport Allowance, Leave Travel Concession and medical facilities as admissible under rules.

Ration Money and Border Allowances

Ration Money Allowance is an important benefit in CAPF jobs. In some cases, ration may be provided directly, while in other cases cash allowance may be paid as per rules. Because the rate and payment method can change, it is better not to treat it as a fixed amount in every salary table.

ITBP personnel posted in difficult border areas may also get special compensatory or hardship-related allowances. These allowances depend on the location and official classification of the area. A posting in a high-altitude or remote border area may therefore give better total earnings than a normal peace posting.

Deductions from ITBP Salary

The biggest regular deduction is usually NPS contribution, where applicable. It is generally 10% of basic pay plus DA. For a Constable with ₹21,700 basic pay and ₹13,020 DA, the NPS deduction comes to around ₹3,472 per month.

Other deductions may include insurance, welfare fund, mess-related recovery, income tax, loan recovery or department-level deductions. This is why gross salary and in-hand salary are not the same.

ITBP Career Growth

ITBP salary improves through annual increment, DA revision and promotion. A Constable can be promoted to Head Constable, ASI, SI and higher ranks through departmental rules, seniority, vacancies, exams and service record.

Promotion gives better basic pay and better allowances. Apart from money, rank growth also brings higher responsibility, command duties and administrative authority.
