SSB means Sashastra Seema Bal, one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It is mainly responsible for border guarding, internal security support, law-and-order duties, election duty, disaster support and other national security-related assignments.
The salary in SSB depends on the post. A Constable, Head Constable, ASI and SI do not get the same pay because their pay levels are different. However, the salary structure follows the Central Government 7th Pay Commission system. This means basic pay, DA, HRA, Transport Allowance, Ration Money Allowance and other admissible benefits are added as per rules.
For a practical understanding, this article gives the main SSB pay scale for different posts and a detailed in-hand salary table for SSB Constable, because Constable is the most commonly searched entry-level post.

SSB Pay Scale
SSB salary is based on the pay matrix level of the post. Recent SSB recruitment notices show Constable posts in Pay Level-3 ₹21,700–₹69,100, Head Constable posts in Pay Level-4 ₹25,500–₹81,100, Assistant Sub Inspector posts in Pay Level-5 ₹29,200–₹92,300, and Sub Inspector posts in Pay Level-6 ₹35,400–₹1,12,400. SSB notifications also mention DA, Ration Money Allowance, HRA and other admissible allowances for these posts.
| SSB Post | Pay Level | Pay Scale |
| Constable | Level-3 | ₹21,700–₹69,100 |
| Head Constable | Level-4 | ₹25,500–₹81,100 |
| Assistant Sub Inspector | Level-5 | ₹29,200–₹92,300 |
| Sub Inspector | Level-6 | ₹35,400–₹1,12,400 |
The basic pay is only the starting point. The actual monthly salary becomes higher after adding DA, HRA, Transport Allowance and other benefits.
SSB Constable Salary at One Place
The table below gives an approximate salary calculation for a newly appointed SSB Constable at basic pay of ₹21,700. DA is calculated at 60%, as the Central Government revised DA from 58% to 60% with effect from 1 January 2026.
| Salary Component | X City | Y City | Z City / Other Places |
| Basic Pay | ₹21,700 | ₹21,700 | ₹21,700 |
| Dearness Allowance, 60% | ₹13,020 | ₹13,020 | ₹13,020 |
| HRA | ₹6,510 | ₹4,340 | ₹2,170 |
| Transport Allowance with DA | ₹5,760 | ₹2,880 | ₹2,880 |
| Approx. Gross Salary | ₹46,990 | ₹41,940 | ₹39,770 |
| Pension Deduction, approx. | ₹3,472 | ₹3,472 | ₹3,472 |
| Other Deductions, approx. | ₹500–₹1,200 | ₹500–₹1,200 | ₹500–₹1,200 |
| Approx. In-Hand Salary | ₹42,000–₹43,000 | ₹37,300–₹38,000 | ₹35,000–₹36,000 |
This table does not include Ration Money Allowance as a fixed amount because its payment depends on admissibility, current orders and whether ration is given in kind or paid in cash. If Ration Money Allowance is paid separately, the practical in-hand amount can increase further.
SSB Constable In-Hand Salary
The starting in-hand salary of an SSB Constable is usually around ₹35,000 to ₹43,000 per month, depending on place of posting, HRA category, deductions and ration-related benefits.
A posting in an X-category city gives higher HRA and higher Transport Allowance, so salary becomes better. In smaller areas or Z-category places, HRA is lower, so in-hand salary also becomes lower. However, SSB personnel may also serve in border and field areas, where some additional allowances may apply as per posting conditions.
Gross Salary vs In-Hand Salary
Gross salary means the total salary before deductions. In-hand salary means the amount credited to the bank account after deductions.
For example, a Constable posted in an X-category city may have a gross salary of around ₹46,990 before ration-related benefits. After pension contribution and other small deductions, the salary may come around ₹42,000 to ₹43,000.
In a Z-category area, gross salary may be around ₹39,770, and in-hand salary may come around ₹35,000 to ₹36,000. The final amount can change from person to person.
Main Allowances Given in SSB
The first major allowance is Dearness Allowance. DA is calculated as a percentage of basic pay. At 60% DA, an SSB Constable with ₹21,700 basic pay receives ₹13,020 as DA.
The second important allowance is House Rent Allowance. Under the current Central Government HRA structure, HRA becomes 30%, 20% and 10% for X, Y and Z category cities when DA crosses 50%.
The third allowance is Transport Allowance. For Pay Level-3 to Pay Level-8 employees, Transport Allowance is generally ₹3,600 plus DA in higher-class cities and ₹1,800 plus DA in other places. At 60% DA, this becomes ₹5,760 or ₹2,880.
SSB personnel are also eligible for Ration Money Allowance as admissible. This is an important benefit in CAPF-type services. Apart from this, personnel may get medical facilities, leave benefits, uniform-related benefits, risk or hardship-related allowances, field-related allowances and other benefits depending on posting and government rules.
Deductions from SSB Salary
The biggest deduction is usually pension contribution under NPS or the applicable pension scheme. For a Constable, this may be around 10% of basic pay plus DA. On ₹21,700 basic pay and ₹13,020 DA, this comes to about ₹3,472 per month.
Other deductions may include insurance, welfare fund, income tax, mess-related recovery, loan recovery or other department-level deductions. Because of this, the same post can show different in-hand salaries for different employees.
Salary Growth in SSB
SSB salary increases through annual increment, DA revision and promotion. A Constable starts at ₹21,700 basic pay, but the basic pay rises every year as per the pay matrix. When basic pay increases, DA, HRA and pension contribution also change.
Promotion gives a bigger increase. A Constable can move to Head Constable, ASI, SI and higher ranks through departmental rules, seniority, vacancies, examinations and performance.
Why SSB Salary Is Considered Good
SSB salary is attractive because it combines government pay, uniform service, allowances, pension-related benefits and long-term career security. The job is physically demanding and may involve border duty, difficult terrain, transfers and strict discipline. Still, for candidates who want a stable defence-style government career, SSB is a strong option.
